Montjuic's cinema under the stars

25 July 2019 Montjuic's cinema under the stars

In 1731 work began on the fortress at Montjuïc. It was one of the principal defence structures in Barcelona at that time and within its ramparts and great halls much of the history of Catalunya was written. As time went on a massive swathe of protected parkland spread out around it dotted with several world class museums, art galleries and fabulous formal gardens. Don’t miss the city’s exuberant botanical gardens, the jaw-dropping Joan Miró art museum and the stone amphitheatre of the Teatre Grec, which stages a broad spectrum of concerts and performances throughout the year.

Above all though, MontjuÏc became an essential green space that offers welcome respite from the city, and in the balmy heat of summer becomes a public outdoor living room for gathering extended family and friends. The ‘cinema under the stars’, erected within the walls of the former moat, now a cool, grassy oasis, makes the most relaxing end to a day spent exploring the city.

Arrive around 8.30pm to enjoy live music and a picnic before settling in to enjoy big names in the history of cinema from Hollywood golden oldies to contemporary classics.

How to book?

Twice weekly showings cost €6.50 and run until August 2nd. Deck chairs and organic picnics can also be pre-booked online. Programmes and tickets are available at www.salamontjuic.org

How to get there?

An experience in itself. Take Metro Line 2 to Paral.lel and connect to the park via a cog railway dating back to the 1920s. From there a cable car whisks you up to the castle - a great opportunity to feast your eyes on some of the best views the city has to offer.
